What a visit to Samburu actually costs

A non-resident adult pays $85 a day in Samburu National Reserve and $70 a day in Buffalo Springs or Shaba, and no combined ticket is published for any of them. Those are two counties charging under two separate finance laws, so a route that crosses the Ewaso Ng'iro bridge pays on both sides of it. Add a vehicle charge and a camping charge on top and an ordinary day here becomes one of the most expensive park days in East Africa. This page prices three real trips against those figures and shows where every dollar goes.

If you only want the answer

Two people self-driving from Nairobi with their own tent, three nights at the public campsite inside Samburu National Reserve, come to roughly $854: $510 in entry fees at $85 per person per day, $150 in camping at the $25 non-resident rate in the county schedule, KES 2,400 in vehicle charges and about $175 of diesel for roughly 870 km. Add Buffalo Springs to the same three days and the total rises to about $1,008, because the $70 Isiolo charge is a second ticket rather than a discount on the first. A fly-in stay at Saruni Samburu in Kalama Conservancy, three nights for two with Safarilink and two days of driving into the reserve, runs to about $3,698 before extras.

Budget one: self-drive camping in Samburu National Reserve

About $854 for two people over three nights, and every line comes from the Samburu County Finance Act 2023 except the fuel. The entry charge is $85 per non-resident adult, $50 per non-resident child, and the same schedule prices camping and special activities at $25 per non-resident adult per night. A vehicle with fewer than six seats costs KES 800, about $6 at the September 2026 rate of KES 129.4 to the dollar. Nothing in that budget touches Buffalo Springs or Shaba, which is exactly why it is the cheapest honest version of this trip.

The schedule says nothing about how long a ticket lasts. It does not say 24 hours, it does not say per day, and it does not say single entry. Only the delivery van line carries the words per entry and only the filming lines carry per day. Every site that tells you a Samburu ticket runs for 24 hours from entry is repeating something that appears in no legal text we could open. Ask at the gate what you are buying, and get the answer written on the receipt before you drive in.

The camping line is the county's own figure. The best-known unofficial guide to the reserve quotes $30 per person per night for the public campsite by the river and says you pay cash at Archer's Gate, which sits $5 above the legal rate and contradicts the claim elsewhere that the gates take no cash at all. Take the schedule as your reference and treat any higher number at the gate as something to query on the spot.

Budget two: the river crossing, where the double ticket bites

About $1,008 for the same two people and the same three nights, because one day of that trip crosses the Ewaso Ng'iro and bills both counties. Samburu National Reserve belongs to Samburu County and charges $85. Buffalo Springs and Shaba belong to Isiolo County and charge $70 under a separate schedule that does not mention Samburu at all. Neither law refers to the other, neither mentions a combined ticket, a reciprocity arrangement or a drive-through rule at the bridge, and no county statement to that effect has been published.

The practical effect is a single day priced at $155 per person. Two people driving out of Samburu in the morning and into Buffalo Springs after lunch owe $170 to one county and $140 to the other, plus KES 800 and KES 500 in vehicle charges, before they have eaten anything. Isiolo is cheaper on every line of its schedule, so the direction of travel changes the bill: a Buffalo Springs base with day trips into Samburu costs more per crossing day than the reverse, because Samburu is the dearer ticket.

One thing does look plausible on the Isiolo side. Its law prices its reserves under a single heading, Isiolo National Reserve, with no separate table for Buffalo Springs and none for Shaba. That makes it reasonable to expect one Isiolo ticket to cover both, and the text stops short of saying so. Confirm it at the gate before you plan a Shaba morning on a Buffalo Springs ticket.

Camping in Isiolo County costs more than camping in Samburu County even though entry costs less: $30 per non-resident adult against $25. Both schedules also carry a reservation charge per week per site, KES 12,000 in Samburu and KES 10,000 in Isiolo, which is the only booking-related figure either law publishes.

Budget three: fly in and sleep in a conservancy

About $3,698 for two people over three nights at Saruni Samburu, and the structural point in this budget is that a conservancy bed carries no reserve charge of its own. Saruni sits in Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy, on the eastern boundary of Samburu National Reserve around Archer's Post. Sleeping there costs you nothing in county entry fees. You pay the $85 only on the days you actually drive through a reserve gate, which in this budget is two days out of three.

That is the rule for the whole ring of conservancies around the three reserves. Westgate to the west and north-west, Kalama to the east, Namunyak well to the north around the Mathews Range, and the country around Mount Ololokwe all levy their own conservancy fee, usually collected by the camp and often folded into the nightly rate. A stay there grants no right to drive in Samburu, Buffalo Springs or Shaba. What it grants instead are the things the reserves forbid: night drives, walking safaris and off-road driving all happen on conservancy ground.

Saruni's own website quotes from US$800 and offers a 2026 rate document for download. Whether that figure is per person or per villa, and whether the conservancy fee sits inside it, is not stated on the page, so the lodge line below is an estimate rather than a confirmed rack rate. Safarilink is the firmer number: $289 one way and $473 return from Nairobi Wilson, excluding taxes, at the same price in high and low season.

Add a day inside Buffalo Springs or Shaba and the same budget gains $140 for two people plus KES 500 for the vehicle. Kalama's own conservancy fee is not published separately, and whether Saruni's rate already absorbs it is worth asking on reservations@sarunibasecamp.com before you book.

The vehicle charges, in shillings

Vehicles are charged in shillings for everyone, whatever passport the driver holds, and Isiolo is cheaper than Samburu on every line. The gap runs right through both schedules, so the county you enter changes the vehicle bill as well as the ticket.

Two things are worth knowing before you hire. The staffel skips the class between 13 and 23 seats in both counties, so a vehicle of that size has no rate set in law anywhere. And the Samburu Finance Bill 2025 prints KES 1,600 on the 24 to 25 seat line where the 2023 Act and the 2024 Bill both print KES 4,800, which looks like a typographical slip in a draft document rather than a cut.

Aircraft landing charges are set county-wide: KES 3,200 for a 3 to 6 seater and KES 4,800 for a 7 to 20 seater in Samburu, against KES 1,500 and KES 2,000 proposed in Isiolo. Scheduled Safarilink and AirKenya passengers do not pay these directly.

Getting there: the road, the pump and the plane

By road it is 320 to 350 km from Nairobi and six to seven hours, all of it on the A2, the Kenyan leg of the Great North Road. The run goes Thika, Kenol, Sagana, Karatina, Marua, Nanyuki, Timau, Isiolo and Archer's Post, and the tarmac holds well past Archer's Post towards Marsabit. Isiolo to Archer's Post is 34 km and Archer's Post to the reserve gate is about 13 km. The murram starts at the turning to each gate rather than somewhere out on the highway, and exactly where that point falls varies by gate.

For the fuel line, EPRA's maximum pump prices for the cycle from 15 August to 14 September 2026 put diesel at KES 217.86 a litre in Nairobi and super petrol at KES 214.03, roughly $1.68 and $1.65. A loaded 4x4 at 12 litres per 100 km over about 870 km burns around 104 litres, which is about KES 22,700 or $175. EPRA resets on the 14th of each month, so recheck if you travel after mid-September. Assume no fuel inside any of the three reserves and fill at Isiolo or Archer's Post.

Flying skips all of it. Safarilink runs two to three flights a day from Wilson, departing 08:00 and 10:20 with a third at 13:30 in high season, at $289 one way and $473 return excluding taxes, with a strict 15 kg soft-bag allowance. AirKenya flies P2 871 daily at 09:45, arriving 10:45, and publishes no fares in its own 2026 timetable, so the ranges circulating on blogs have nothing behind them. Both services are northern circuits with several stops, so times move by 40 minutes or more, and both need a minimum of two passengers per airstrip to operate.

Roadworks are a live factor on this route. KeNHA announced a 147 km dual carriageway between Marua, Nanyuki and Isiolo in February 2026 with no contractor or timeline named, and closed a failed section of the A2 between Isiolo and Kirish for four weeks in April 2026.

Paying, and what nobody can tell you

You pay the county, and you are entitled to an official receipt. Both finance laws regulate payment only in general terms: Samburu defines an authorised channel as a county-appointed receiver or any other method the county prescribes, and Isiolo devotes a section to payment that requires a receipt for every transaction and instructs the payer to demand one. Take that literally. The receipt is your only proof that you paid the published rate.

Beyond that the picture is genuinely unresolved. eCitizen is the KWS booking system, and these are not KWS reserves, so a KWS ticket or annual card does nothing here. Samburu County runs its own collection platform called Supa Pay, and whether it operates at the reserve gates is not established. Operators variously claim that cash in dollars or shillings, Visa, Mastercard and M-Pesa are all accepted, that cash is refused everywhere, and that a 24-hour eCitizen ticket is compulsory. None of those claims carries a source document, and the last one contradicts the basic fact that KWS does not levy here.

Carry both. Bring dollars and shillings in cash and a phone with M-Pesa, and expect to argue your corner if the figure quoted differs from the schedule. Ask for the rate in writing before you commit to a route, because the gap between $70 and $85 across one bridge is worth confirming while you can still change the plan.

Where the money surprises people

Two reserves, two tickets. Crossing the Ewaso Ng'iro bridge turns $85 per person into $155 for that day, and a couple pays $310 in entry fees before the vehicle charge.
The child rate is $50 in Samburu and $40 in Isiolo, and neither law defines what age a child is. Every age cut-off quoted online, whether under three, under five, three to eleven or under eighteen, has no basis in either document.
Kenyan citizens pay KES 1,600 in Samburu, exactly the same as residents, which is unusual and is what the law says. In Isiolo a citizen pays KES 500 and a resident KES 1,000.
Sleeping in a conservancy removes the reserve charge entirely on days you stay out of the reserves, and conservancies allow night drives, walking and off-road driving that the reserves do not.
The cheapest legal night inside Samburu National Reserve is $110 per person: $25 of camping plus $85 of entry. The tent is the small line.
Camping costs more on the Isiolo side than the Samburu side, $30 against $25, while entry costs less. The two schedules move independently.
Filming charges jumped in the Samburu Finance Bill 2025: KES 24,000 a day for a crew of ten became a proposed KES 50,000, and shooting outside the reserve went from KES 96,000 to a proposed KES 200,000.
No tariff document carries the year 2026 for any of the three reserves. The newest Samburu paper is a bill from September 2025 and the newest usable Isiolo paper is a bill from 2023.
